In recent days, the United States news media has given much attention to the question of same-sex marriage.
It is important to
note that, for Christians, this is not really a debate of what states or nations deem as legal. Our
contemplation must be fully grounded in what our God has said about marriage, family, and sexual behavior.
Over the next several
blogs I will share Scriptures that cover this topic. Today, let us begin
with Genesis 1 and 2.
God said, “Let us
make mankind in our image, after our likeness, so that they may rule over the
fish of the sea, the birds of the air, cattle, over all the earth, and over all
the creatures that move upon the earth.” God created human beings in His own
image; in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them. God
blessed them and God said, “Be fruitful and multiply! Fill the earth and subdue
it!” (Genesis 1:26-28a)
The Lord God said, “It
is not good for man to be alone. I will make him a complementary companion, kÿnegdo
(according to the opposite of him).” And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to
fall upon the man, and the man slept. God took part of his side and closed up
the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the part He had taken
out of the man, and He brought her to the man. Then the man said, “At last,
this one is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; of this one it will be
said, ‘woman’, for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his
father and mother and unites with his wife, and they become one flesh. (Genesis
2:18, 2:21-24)
